Intent, Implementation and Impact for PE
Intent
Overall Vision
At Downe Manor Primary School, our intent is to provide a PE curriculum that inspires and empowers all pupils to develop a lifelong passion for physical activity. We believe that through high-quality PE experiences, pupils can enhance their physical, cognitive, emotional, and social well-being, enabling them to lead healthy and active lives.
Aims and Objectives
- To deliver a broad and balanced PE curriculum that promotes physical development, sport-specific skills, and knowledge of healthy lifestyles.
- To foster a positive and inclusive sporting culture that values teamwork, resilience, and fair play.
- To develop pupils' leadership skills, confidence, and self-esteem through opportunities for individual and group achievements.
- To offer a range of extracurricular activities and competitions that encourage participation and celebrate success.
- To ensure progression in physical abilities, fundamental movement skills, and tactical understanding across all age groups.
Implementation
Curriculum Design and Planning
We use Complete PE curriculum to develop our children’s knowledge, skills and understanding in PE. We employ a specialist sports coach from The Elms Sports to work alongside our teachers in delivering high quality sports lessons. Teachers have access to ‘Complete PE’ planning to support them in delivering a broad and balanced PE curriculum teaching the necessary skills at the appropriate time. Currently all classes throughout KS2 have swimming lessons at different points during the academic year.
Enrichment and Extracurricular Activities
We provide a wealth of extracurricular activities and competitions to enrich our PE provision and extend opportunities for all pupils. Our extracurricular clubs cover a variety of sports and physical activities, allowing pupils to explore new interests and develop their skills further. Each year we also hold sports days for EYFS, KS1 and KS2 where children are given the opportunity to excel individually and as part of a team.
Inclusivity and Differentiation
We are committed to providing an inclusive PE curriculum that caters to the needs of all pupils, regardless of their abilities or background. Our teachers design activities that promote inclusion, and differentiation strategies are employed to ensure access and progress for every pupil. We liaise closely with the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) to create individualised plans and adaptations where necessary, fostering a supportive and enabling environment for all.
Impact
Our PE provision has a good impact on pupil outcomes. Pupils make good progress in their physical abilities, skill acquisition, and tactical understanding. They are motivated to engage in regular physical activity outside of school and adopt healthier lifestyles. Pupils develop a love for sport and demonstrate improved levels of self-confidence, resilience, and self-esteem. They also exhibit excellent teamwork, leadership, and communication skills in a range of contexts.
