Downe Manor Primary School

Downe Manor, where everybody has the opportunity to be inspired to reach their full potential through memorable learning experiences

Cultural Capital and Experiences

Cultural Capital is the accumulation of knowledge, behaviours, and skills that a child gains over time through different experiences and opportunities. They draw upon these to demonstrate their cultural awareness, knowledge and competence. It is one of the key ingredients a child will draw upon to be successful in society, their career and the world of work.

Curriculum Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent

The intent of embedding cultural capital in our primary school curriculum is to provide all our pupils with the essential knowledge and cultural experiences that will equip them to succeed academically and socially, both now and in the future. By valuing and promoting the cultural wealth of our diverse community, we aim to broaden our pupils' horizons, deepen their understanding of the world around them, and foster a strong sense of cultural identity and belonging.

Implementation

1. Curriculum Design: Our curriculum is carefully designed to ensure that all pupils have access to a rich array of cultural experiences, including art, music, literature, history, from various cultures and backgrounds. These experiences are woven into all subjects and are carefully sequenced to build upon prior knowledge and skills.

2. Ethos and Environment: We create a school ethos and environment that celebrates diversity and promotes inclusivity. Displays, celebrations, and assemblies reflect the cultural heritage of our pupils and the wider community, fostering a sense of pride and belonging.

3. Enrichment Activities: We offer a wide range of enrichment activities both within and beyond the school day, including visits to museums, art galleries, theatres, and places of cultural significance. These experiences complement classroom learning and provide opportunities for pupils to engage with cultural artefacts and practitioners.

4. Community Engagement: We actively involve parents, carers, and local community members in school events and activities, valuing their input and respecting their cultural perspectives.

5. Language and Literacy: We place a strong emphasis on language development and literacy skills, recognising the importance of language as a vehicle for cultural expression and understanding. Pupils are exposed to a wide range of texts, both fiction and non-fiction, that reflect diverse cultural experiences and perspectives.

Impact

1. Academic Achievement: Through the exposure to a rich cultural curriculum, pupils develop a deeper understanding of subject matter, make meaningful connections between learning areas, and achieve higher academic standards across all subjects.

2. Social and Emotional Development: By fostering a sense of cultural identity and inclusivity, pupils feel valued, respected, and confident in expressing their own cultural backgrounds. This leads to improved social interactions, greater empathy towards others, and increased self-esteem.

3. Aspiration and Ambition: Through exposure to a wide range of cultural experiences and role models, pupils develop aspirations beyond their immediate surroundings, broadening their horizons and ambitions for the future.

4. Cultural Awareness and Understanding: Pupils leave our school with a deep appreciation of the diversity of cultures around them, equipped with the knowledge and skills to navigate an increasingly multicultural society with respect, tolerance, and empathy.

In conclusion, by embedding cultural capital in every aspect of our school's ethos, curriculum, and community engagement, we aim to nurture well-rounded, culturally literate individuals who are prepared to thrive in an ever-changing world.
